Synopsis

A sensitive and moving documentary about the traumatic consequences of sexual abuse.

Skyggenes DalIn a moving manner and with extraordinary sensitivity, the documentary film Remains portrays the life of three siblings who were abused by their father during childhood and are still traumatised by their painful memories.

Trym is now 24 and has often been institutionalised because of depression and suicide attempts. His younger brother, Stale, left Norway so as to get away from the past. Their 30-year-old sister, Camilla, suffers from self-destructive behaviour and is haunted by the ghosts from the past despite all her efforts to escape them. With painful honesty, the siblings share their memories about their abuse. They do not succeed in getting legal justice. Their mother, Bente, also suffers and struggles with her feelings of guilt. She reproaches herself for not having protected her children.

Sexual abuse is not only taboo in Scandinavia. The two filmmakers, Astrid Schau-Larson and Morvary Samaré, try to break the silence with this documentary. The main focus is the damage that childhood sexual abuse inflicts on its victims, and the consequences of such abuse on their daily lives. With calm images, the filmmakers follow the terrible stories of Trym, Stale and Camilla. They represent the stories of many victims who lack the courage to go public and who, like the three siblings, have to struggle with the consequences of their abuse on a daily basis.
