(Lekcja Bialoruskiego)
PL 2006, Regie: Miroslaw Dembinski, OmU, 51 min.

Synopsis

Lekcja BialoruskiegoA Lesson of Belorusian presents young activists who risk reprisals and prison terms for their dedication to free speech and freedom of the press, for their fight against corruption and arbitrariness on the part of the authorities. This is happening right under our noses - in the middle of Europe.
This documentary extensively portrays the events surrounding the 2006 presidential elections in Belorusia and observes a group of students who are fighting for the perpetuation of resistance by disseminating underground magazines, pamphlets, rap songs, and music videos.
When their school was shut down -- it had been one of the last to teach Belorusian and the history of Belarus -- they decided to team up in supporting the democracy in their country by campaigning for the rival candidate of Alexander Lukashenko. Things came to a head dramatically during a pro-democratic mass demo in Minsk.
This film is an impressive demonstration of civil opposition and creative resistance, depicting the hope of a young generation to change the fate of their country for the better.
"With the film\'s vehement images of demonstrations and diverse civil actions by the young Belorussian generation, the film-maker teaches all of us a lesson. And the viewer witnesses more or less bewildered the excesses of a real existing dictatorship in the heart of Europe. The film is a plea, an outcry, and - at the same time - a cool-headed analysis of the daily turmoil of political struggle. Miroslaw Dembinski succeeded in aligning cinematic means of the reportage with those of narrating political documentary film in a way that deeply touches the viewer." (49.
