Synopsis
The Dignity of the Nobodies is the latest social document by veteran Argentine director Fernando Solanas (Hour of the Furnaces, A Social Genocide). It is an inspiring story of pride and resistance from the perspective of the disenchanted and dispossessed workers and citizens of a country in crisis. The tragic mismanagement of Argentina by military dictatorships and the neo-liberal power structure has caused one of the more progressive Latin American nations to decline into one of the most destitute and corrupt. But social organisations and whole communities are fighting for justice, setting up homeless shelters, for instance, or staging demonstrations by factory and farm workers against privatisation.
"The idea preached to us all in the 1990s was that reality could not be changed and we had to bow down to neoliberalism, which was the only path. A mentality of defeat, or memory loss and falsity took hold of people. But with time another reality became increasingly apparent and countless individual and collective initiatives testified to the opposite. In The Dignity of the Nobodies, I wanted to highlight the small victories and daily heroic deeds carried out by 'nobodies', as well as the alternatives and projects of solidarity which prove another world is possible."
