USA 2007, Regie: Michael Moore, dF, 113 min.

Synopsis

SickoIf you want to stay healthy in the U.S., you had better not fall ill. This is the core message of Michael Moore's new documentary, in which he addresses the illnesses of the U.S. health care system. Sicko portrays average U.S. citizens whose lives have turned into horror stories: parents whose child died because their health care provider would not cover the costs for the hospital whose emergency room he was taken to; or a nurse whose husband died because his health insurance deemed a bone marrow transplantation to have little chance of success. These are but two of the over 25,000 case studies Moore was sent in the few months after launching his internet appeal "Send Me Your Health Care Horror Stories".

It comes as no surprise that Moore returns to the familiar David vs. Goliath style his movies (such as Fahrenheit 9/11) are known for. Sicko is the indictment of the capitalistic health insurance system, the pharmaceutical industry, and, above all, the U.S. government's adherence to a policy which tolerates the fact that roughly 50 million Americans have no health care coverage. By presenting the state-controlled health care systems in Canada, Great Britain and France, Moore points to alternatives to the existing U.S. system. Carrying his analysis to the extreme, Moore takes a group of heavily-injured 9/11 helpers to Cuba, where - in contrast to the U.S. - they receive the necessary medical treatment.
"See the Movie, Start the Revolution" reads Moore's newest call to his fans on his website, where he also advertises a raffle:
"Take a Republican to Sicko! C'mon, we all have a conservative in the family! They mean well. It's just that they believe what they've been told about that scary 'socialized medicine.' Treat them to the movie this weekend and tell them to send me their ticket stub and entry form. I will hold a drawing and the lucky winner will get to have me come to their home and do their laundry -- just like in France! Now, what would make a Republican happier than to see me working away in their laundry room?!"
