Synopsis
Adriana is a 13-year-old girl from Mexico City whose kidnapping by sex traffickers sets in motion a desperate mission by her 17-year-old brother Jorge to save her. As he dodges immigration officers and incredible obstacles to track the kidnappers, he meets Ray, a Texas cop whose own family loss to sex trafficking makes him an ally in the boy's quest. They forge a close bond as they give desperate chase to Adriana's kidnappers before she is sold and disappears forever into the brutal global underworld, a place from which few victims ever return.
Jose Rivera, whose Motorcycle Diaries screenplay earned him an Oscar nomination, wrote the screenplay. His research was based on findings published by Peter Landesman in a 2003 New York Times Magazine article called 'Sex Slaves on Main St.' The producers Rosylin Heller and Roland Emmerich approached the young German director Marco Kreuzpaintner to turn the material into a film.
Trade: Welcome to America premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. At its German premiere at the Munich Film Festival, director Marco Kreuzpaintner was awarded the Bernhard Wicki Peace Prize for German Cinema. The jury wrote in its statement: "Marco Kreuzpaintner takes us on a dramatic hunt for a child whose claim to human dignity is taken away in an instant, reducing her to a mere item of trade. Using dramatic imagery, which at times borders on the unbearable, he forces us to take part in the martyrdom of the 13-year-old Adriana. Without sentimentality or voyeurism, he presents us with the disastrous consequences of modern sex slavery. With great sensitivity, Kreuzpaintner uncovers the deep wounds of the oppressed victims of the trade. Marco Kreuzpaintner relates this human drama -- without false pathos or sympathy, and without censure. The result is courageous and great cinema which uses great actors, especially Kevin Kline, to rebel against ignorance and indifference in the face of the global trafficking of human beings."
