Synopsis
C.O.B. Civilians on the Battlefield tells the story of four Germans working as 'war extras' for the U.S. army in southern Germany. For a few weeks, they receive a new identity as Arab civilians, sheiks, or terrorists. Then, on German territory, they simulate a state of emergency. In a kind of wargame, American soldiers are trained and prepared for the circumstances that await them in Iraq.
But these performers are not fanatics who love to play war; they are a mixed group of people trying to supplement their income. Bernhard is a lifecoach, a practising Christian, and a conscientious objector and Florian is a student who regularly attends the punk-inspired May 1st demos in Berlin. Lena, with whom they perform, is an orthodox Jew born in Russia, who has carried out her voluntary military service in Israel: she is astonished at the 'do-gooders's' participation in the wargame...
Interview with Teresina Moscatiello
How did you become aware of this unusual topic?
A friend of mine participated in such a scenario once - when she told me about it, I didn't believe her. I did some research and came across an ad: "extras for role-play wanted." The ad also gave the date of the casting. I was very curious and wanted to find out if anyone would actually go there to apply. So, one afternoon I went to a big hotel in Berlin. It was incredible: the place was full of people: they were such a mixed group, I could never have invented them. That was the moment when I realized that I had to make a film about it!
What are the criteria one has to fulfil in order to work as a 'war extra' for the U.S. army?
Students have the best chances of being accepted, and people who can work flexible hours. I don't mean to advertise this as a job. I wouldn't have wanted to do it as a job, but I had no choice. I wanted to make the film, so I had to go. One week later I was accepted, and that gave me the basis of my film.
