Synopsis

Der Mörder meiner MutterSeven years after the genocide in Rwanda, a woman is searching for her mother's murderer. She finds an old school friend and gets him to talk. Eugenie Musayidire, this year's winner of the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award, is from Rwanda. She came to Germany at the end of the 1970s to escape political persecution. Her mother stayed in Rwanda.
In April 1994, Rwanda was beset by genocide. Spurred on by the government, Hutus attacked Tutsis and 800,000 people died in the course of 100 days. Eugenie found out about her mother's death and that of countless members of her family shortly afterwards. Eyewitnesses reported that her Hutu neighbour had killed the old Tutsi lady with an axe. Eugenie knew the man and had played with him as a child. Seven years later, she went looking for him, finding him in a village prison. The first question was: "Why did you kill her?"

The documentary filmmaker Martin Buchholz accompanied Eugenie with his camera from the very first meeting with her mother's murderer to the court sentencing. What resulted was a story about victims and perpetrators, hatred and forgiving, feelings of revenge and the longing for justice.
In 2003, Martin Buchholz was awarded the Adolf Grimme Prize for the screenplay and direction. In order to help the reconciliation process in her homeland, Eugenie Musayidire founded the association Hope in Rwanda with the aim of establishing places of encounter and to offer therapeutic help, enabling affected persons to talk about their personal memories of the terrible events. She received the Nuremberg International Human Rights Award in 2007.
