Synopsis

100 Days100 Days was filmed in Rwanda and employs Rwandan locals as actors. Its director, Nick Hughes, a former BBC reporter, has tracked both the events leading up to the genocide and the genocide itself.

The film begins with the love story between Baptiste and Josette, two young Tutsis who are planning to get married. Their plans are disrupted by the Hutu leaders' call on their people to kill their Tutsi neighbours. In the onsetting chaos the lovers are separated. Josette and her family try to find refuge in a Catholic Church. The calculating priest, long corrupted by the influence afforded him by his status in the community, has other plans. He gives sanctuary from the killing to Josette only to forcibly violate her as his 'wife'. When the Belgian army contingent protecting the church is called back, the Hutu militia attack and massacre thousands of women and children...

100 Days was shot in Kibuye in 1999, a landscape of extraordinary beauty that had been the backdrop to some of the worst atrocities of the killings in 1994.
100 Days is a fictional account of the 1994 genocide, based on eyewitness testimony, with a cast that is largely Rwandan. Although drama coaches were hired, many of the actors simply drew on their recollections because the script so closely resembled actual events.

More than any of the other more lavishly produced international feature films in its wake, 100 Days presents an African perspective on the genocide. It not only shows the the betrayal of the UN and the international community but also that of the Catholic Church.
