(Cyprien, moi et les autres)
B 2006, Regie: Jean-Baptiste Dumont, OmeU, 35 min.

Synopsis

Cyprien, moi et les autresCyprien asks his best friend Jean-Baptiste to be his best man. This is supposed to be a great honour and at the same time a sign of trust. But there?s one problem: Cyprien is homophobic and has no idea his best friend is gay. Before the wedding, Jean-Baptiste wants to put the tables straight. He films not only the preparations for the wedding but also for his coming out.

The unusual documentary format of this debut film is very refreshing: the director, Jean-Baptiste Dumont, has used his camera to observe himself and his best friend for nine months, up until the decisive moment of both his coming-out and Cyprien's wedding. The film lives from the tension between the 'knowing' (on the part of the director and the audience) and the 'not-knowing' (on Cyprien's part), which leads to the crucial question: How will Cyprien react when he finds out his best friend is gay?

That this question is not easy to answer is shown in a whole series of sequences in which Cyprien, believing himself to be surrounded by like-minded people, expresses his homophobia. The film thus becomes a lesson on what can happen when certain general prejudices come into contact with concrete individuals and trusted certainties are tested by a personal relationship.
