Synopsis

Rape for Who I AmEvery twenty-nine seconds a woman is raped in South Africa.

Rape For Who I Am documents the situation of black lesbians in Johannesburg and the surrounding townships. The film interweaves four experiences of prejudice and targeted rape suffered by black lesbians, the strength and inspiring warmth of whom demonstrates that they refuse to become victims.

Keba and Bathini desperately try to gain confidence and take control of their lives in an environment devoid of any parental support.
Thirty-two-year old Mary bravely returns to the place where she was raped along with her girlfriend and relives the experience.
Twenty-three year old Buhle's powerful and poignant story explores the wider issues and implications, showing how homosexuality inevitably means confronting homophobia.

Rape For Who I Am is Lovinsa Kavuma's most recent and most personal documentary to date. The film explores the hidden world of sexual abuse. It acknowledges the true extent of sexual discrimination in South Africa and its effect on young lesbians and it leads the viewer into the lives of four remarkable women, discovering their place within a contemporary African landscape.

Rape For Who I am was screened at the Sundance Film Festival 2006 as part of the shorts documentary section and received the Audience Award for Best Short Film at the Commonwealth Film Festival
