Synopsis
Alejandro is a 16 year-old boy. He lives in Argentina and belongs to the first generation of children born with HIV. Thanks to his medication and the help of his family, Ale lives an almost normal life: he goes to school, plays in a Rock and Roll band, is keen on reading and is discovering his interest in girls. Yet, in a crucial point, he is different from his friends: he has to decide whether to talk about his seropositivity or whether to remain silent about it... HIV/AIDS is the most devastating virus of our times; in little more than twenty years it has caused about 22 million deaths and the infection of at least 42 million people. Thanks to antiretroviral drugs the mortality curve has started to decline considerably. The prejudices, however, persist, which is why many keep silent rather than deal openly with their disease. By now Alejandro's generation, too, has grown up and has to find out what it means to deal with the virus. While colleges and the church in Argentina are still debating whether sexual education in schools should be obligatory, many of these boys and girls are starting to form an identity, learning to judge for themselves, and having their first sexual relationships. For them the time has come to either face society and thus risk discrimination and rejection or to endanger exactly those who mean the most to them. Playing in Silence is a documentary that is intent on presenting new perspectives on the HIV/AIDS problem. The young Argentinian director Luciano Zito has made a film that encourages viewers to think about stereotypes and about the responsibility people have for themselves and for their fellow human beings.
