Synopsis
It is windy on the plateau where Xiao Yan's school is located. The schoolchildren are standing in line, waiting for the headmaster's last words before the holidays begin. But the words don't bear good news for the 13-year-old girl, who lives with her mother and her two younger brothers in a small locality somewhere in the Chinese provinces. Next year, the school fees are going to be raised. The family, struggling to make ends meet as it is, can't afford the extra fees. There seems to be only one solution -- Xiao Yan will have to quit school and get married like her friend Sanhua, who is about to be forced into marriage. However, Xiao Yan doesn't think that schooling is unimportant for girls, and when she is introduced to her future husband, she decides to raise the money for the fees herself, selling fresh eggs and berries. Nobody would have imagined the tenacity Xiao Yan manifests to make sure to have a seat in the classroom next year.
The award-winning film tells a serious story, but its tone - convincingly conveyed by the leading actress - is optimistic and full of humour.
