Synopsis
In five different and original animation films, Balla from the Ivory Coast, Luis from Ecuador, Shoubin from China, Julia from Russia and Sandra from Brazil tell their accounts of modern slavery in the heart of Europe. They were all helped to escape slavery by the Belgian NGO Sürya. The stories are told by the victims themselves and the animation is deliberately monstrous. The Sürya organisation in Liege, which initiated the project, offers the services of social workers, lawyers and psychologists to the victims of modern people trafficking. The ironic dimension reached by acting out the stories with plasticine figures, silhouettes, glass-painting and digital animation makes the direct consequences of failed asylum policy and the crimes of bureaucrats, grafters, people traffickers, pimps and even ordinary citizens against migrants all the more grotesque and embarrassing. The film is a project of Fondation Roi Baudouin, an NGO which aims to promote integration and multi-cultural co-operation in Belgium and Europe.
