Synopsis

Angola - Saudades de quem te ama

Angola - Saudades From the One Who Loves You is a haunting portrait of a country full of contrasts -- between the poor and the rich, between despair and hope. In 1975, Angola achieved independence but a civil war between the former independence movement, MPLA, which formed the government, and UNITA raged until 2002 and destroyed political and societal structures. Five years after the signing of the Luena Protocol, there is officially peace in the country. But although Angola is one of Africa's biggest producers of oil and diamonds, the 27-year-long civil war has left its marks -- insufficient water and food, a damaged infrastructure and a languishing economy. Anyone who describes the reality of Angola risks his life. Despite the riches from oil and diamonds, most Angolans live in misery.

With Angola - Saudades From the One Who Loves You, director Richard Pakleppa takes a lyrical journey through the war-torn country, which is on the verge of a transformation that fails to materialise. The viewers are presented with a kaleidoscopic view of the societal and economic state of Angola. People from different worlds express their views and talk about the changes which shape their lives, floating between hopelessness and a desire for change. Oil barons, who profit from the country's natural resources, and petrol-sniffing children, who live on the streets all get to express themselves. Images of luxury villas, exclusive shopping malls and fashion shoots are contrasted with images of rubbish and decay, whereas the songs and poems of the Angolan musician Paolo Flores reflect the thoughts and feelings of the population.
