(4 luni, 3 saptamini si 2 zile) RO 2007, Regie: Cristian Mungiu, OmU, 113 min.
Synopsis
It's 1987 in the Romanian province during the last years of the Ceaucescu era: Otilia and Gabita are roommates in a student hostel. Otilia rents a shabby hotel room for three nights, which costs an enormous amount. The roommates have an appointment with a certain Mr Bebe who is supposed to carry out an illegal abortion -- Gabita is four months, three weeks and two days pregnant. Bebe refuses money -- he wants to be paid in kind. The film won the Palme d'Or at Cannes and is without doubt one of the best films of 2007.
From an interview with Christian Mungiu:
Mungiu: I think that we filmmakers have the duty to remind of what was. If someone watches 4 months... in a few decades, he will surely smile about the young people who swapped shampoo for cigarettes. He'll ask why they didn't just go and buy the stuff. And then hopefully there'll still be someone who'll be able to tell him about socialism.
Why do the young women in the film panic so much? Were abortions not allowed, like in the GDR for instance?
Mungiu: No, they were banned from the mid-60s on. Our country was given a strange stamp. Heroic mothers were talked about -- women who had had more than five children. It was supposed to be heaven for children. And then, on the other hand, children were taken away from their mothers and put into state homes. There are so many stories to be told about my homeland. As I said, until 1989 we were shut off from the world. Like on another planet. Interview: Peter Beddies, Die Welt, 29 May 2007
