Synopsis
This is the story of a strawberry which yearned for independence. A story about hope, frustration, occupation, globalisation and politics, and at its centre is a small red fruit - a strawberry. From Israel, the mother plants arrive in Gaza, where they are cultivated in the fields of Beit Lahiya to produce the brilliant red fruit destined for Europe.
The filmmaker Ayelet Heller trains her camera on the strawberries and on all those who are charged with nurturing them from seedlings in the Gaza Strip until they are en route to their destination in European gourmet food shops. In this fateful year in Gaza, the film crew documented the agricultural cycle of the fruit as well as the political events that directly affected the lives of the farmers who cultivate it. From the strawberry fields of Beit Lahiya, we witness the Disengagement, the withdrawal of the IDF from Gaza and its re-entry after two months; the Hamas victory in the Palestinian elections and the closure that followed. In December, the strawberry fields became a battlefield and the site of a vicious cycle of violence.
The occupation, globalisation and politics-as-usual are all challenges to be faced by both the berries and those who work the land, depicted in this rich, nuanced and award-winning film where Mother Nature is but one of the forces at play.
